He was raised in Rising Sun, Indiana, subsequently graduating from Rising Sun High School in 1983. He, at various times, was also a resident of Switzerland County, where he was integral in the genesis of their Youth SAY Soccer Program and was involved in the original planning of their YMCA located in Vevay, IN. Finally residing in Dearborn County, having been a citizen of Lawrenceburg, Indiana for 20+ years at the time of his passing. Though sickness forced retirement in 2019, he spent 30+ years at Dearborn County Hospital with most of that time as the Head Buyer in the Materials Management Department, with the last years of his career, there, being spent as a Clinical Applications Analyst.
A beloved son, husband, brother, father, papaw, nephew, uncle, and cousin. He is survived by his adored and loving wife Shari Smeeks (Yelton), his father Leroy Smeeks, his brothers Matthew (Sara) Smeeks and Casey (Mary) Smeeks, and his Aunt Nancy and Uncle Wally Bawn. Along with an abundance of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his beloved mother Mary Katherine (Dee Dee) Smeeks, along with multiple Aunts and Uncles.
He left this world peacefully, encircled by those who loved him, after a hard-fought 8+ year battle with Kidney Cancer. Even as cancer presented its most formidable challenges, Mike approached life with a spirit that refused to be conquered. Throughout his courageous battle, he faced each day with unwavering strength, determination, and an inspiring resilience that left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to witness it. His journey was not defined by defeat but by the countless victories achieved through love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to living life to the fullest. His tenacity and positive spirit not only touched the hearts of those closest to him, but also served as a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges.
Mike made an impression on everyone he met through his intelligence/wit, his humor, and his overall good nature. He was a voracious reader and schooled himself, thoroughly, on a wide variety of subjects. He was a lover of the arts, with an encyclopedic knowledge of music and film that he loved to passionately share. He enjoyed cooking, photography, live music, making people laugh, spirited debate, and a good soccer match. Though he could find something of interest, or at least of redeemable quality, in just about anything. He was a good man with a good heart and anyone who knew him will forever count themselves as exceedingly lucky for it. He will be endlessly missed. May he Rest in Peace and live on perpetually in our hearts and memories.
Mike chose not to have a traditional funeral/layout. The family will hold a Celebration of Life February 10th, 2024, from 2-6pm at the Schroeder Building in Rising Sun, Indiana. It will be an informal get-together where friends and family can come together and reminisce, share pictures and stories, and converse on the life and legacy of Michael Smeeks. Light refreshments will be provided. Donations may be made, in his name, to Hospice Care of St. Elizabeth in Edgewood, Kentucky.
