Obituary for Caroline "Carol" Sue Clifford (Sutherland)

Caroline Sue Clifford (nee Sutherland), 69, of Covington, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023. She passed at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, surrounded by family.

Carol was born to William M. Sutherland and Martha M. Moore on December 11th, 1953 in Cincinnati, Ohio. At just a few months old, she was given to James and Lucille McDaniel of Covington, Kentucky. Her adoptive father, James, passed away when she was six years old. Carol was raised by her adoptive mother, Lucille, and her sister LaVerne. She attended Eleventh District Elementary, John G. Carlisle Middle School and Holmes High School. Carol attended Betz College of Business and earned her Associates Degree. She worked as a waitress at many area restaurants including Waffle House and White Castle.

Carol married Michael Price in 1974. They had two daughters, Kelly Marie and Michelle Rae. Carol and Michael divorced in 1980. While exploring her birth family’s genealogy, she found ten siblings (7 brothers, 3 sisters), many of whom she met in her travels. Carol married Stephen Clifford, her high school sweetheart, in 2013. Carol and Steve moved to Pensacola, Florida in 2013 as well. They returned to Covington, Kentucky in 2019 to be closer to family. Carol was a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati Reds, and WWE. She enjoyed traveling, going on cruises and spending time with her grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lucille; her sister LaVerne; daughter Kelly; and granddaughter Courtney. Carol leaves behind her husband Steve and 8 stepchildren; daughter Michelle and son-in-law David S. Dye; grandchildren JJ, Robert, Jonathon, Jacob, Grant, Shyanne, Kaitlyn, Alexis, Gray, Alexandria; nephew Paul Kraft; niece Rachel Brandenburg; her ex-husband Michael Price; and numerous great-grandchildren. 


Memorial services for the public will be held at Serenity Funeral Home on 40 W 6th Street, Covington, Kentucky 41011 on Tuesday, April 4th at 10:00 AM. A service will be held at Noon, followed by a burial ceremony at 2:00PM at Kentucky Veteran’s Cemetery North, 205 Eibeck Lane, Williamstown, KY 41097. A Celebration of Life will be held beginning at 4:00 PM at Impact Life Church, 1 Churchill Dr. Ft. Thomas, Kentucky 41075.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in her honor.
